SUMMER SMASH
Bringing Cricket to Life in Untethered Virtual reality
Set on a virtual SCG pitch, Summer Smash was a game that let fans step into the shoes of a pro batsman, facing three overs of bowling in fully immersive first-person VR. But what set Summer Smash apart wasn’t just the realism — it was the fun.
We levelled up the traditional cricket experience with a suite of arcade-inspired features designed to surprise and delight. Players could unlock multi-ball chaos, swing at supersized balls, watch deliveries in bullet-time slow motion, and even hit their way into bonus levels — including one where the entire pitch was elevated 70 metres into the sky, placing them level with the SCG’s iconic light towers. This wasn’t just cricket. This was cricket with imagination.
Australia’s First Untethered VR Activation
Summer Smash broke ground as Australia’s first untethered VR experience — offering fans complete freedom of movement without cables holding them back. By pairing a wireless VIVE Pro headset with a real cricket bat as the controller, we created a gameplay experience that was both instinctive and incredibly immersive. No buttons to learn. No complex mechanics. Just grab the bat and swing — exactly like you would in real life.
Turning Solo VR Into a Shared Spectacle
Most VR activations are solitary experiences — fun for the player, but invisible to the crowd. We flipped that dynamic by integrating mixed reality into the activation. Using a purpose-built green room and massive 12m² LED screens, we composited the player live into the virtual world, turning them into the star of the show.
Now, friends, family and fans passing by could watch every shot, cheer every six, and celebrate every moment — turning each player into a virtual cricketing legend in front of a live audience.
