Bringing the NRL Finals to Life with Interactive Fan EngagemenT
The NRL Finals Series isn’t just a showcase of top-tier footy — it’s a powerful platform for marketing and fan engagement that grows bigger every year. In 2023, the NRL set out to create more than just moments — they wanted memorable, accessible activations that were inclusive, exciting, and a true celebration of the game’s best qualities.
Traditionally, rugby league game activations have relied on re-skinned templates — think conversion kicks and generic gameplay mechanics. But we saw an opportunity to go deeper, to craft something that captured the true spirit of rugby league in a fresh, interactive way.
Enter NRL Dash — a high-energy, interactive experience that utilised motion capture technology placing fans right in the thick of the action. Built from the ground up, the game mirrored the speed, strength, and agility of the sport. Players took on the role of their favourite mascots and raced head-to-head in a virtual dash to the try line — dodging, bumping, jumping, and fending off obstacles just like their NRL heroes. No controllers needed — fans powered the game by running on the spot, using their own bodies as the joystick.
To maximise impact, gameplay was showcased on massive 10m x 2m LED screens — drawing crowds, turning heads, and creating an unmissable spectacle. The setup was modular and easily redeployed across multiple stadiums and venues, ensuring fans everywhere got a chance to join the action.
